  • Isle Royale Confirmed

Isle Royale National Park have confirmed our registration request for 2 separate crews for this summer.  Crew size is 7-10 people (including adult advisors) so spots will be limited !    Eligible scouts please start considering now so you are prepared to complete the permission form once it is posted.

An overview to whet your appetite:

    • travel day from Rochester to Copper Harbor is Sat 7/19
    • on 7/20 both crews travel by ferry to Rock Harbor on Isle Royale
    • we will spend 6 nights on Isle Royale, at a different campsite each night, hiking ~ 50 miles
    • both crews travel the same route, but in opposite directions
    • we return to Rochester the evening of Sun 7/27

There will be warm-up hikes and equipment shakedowns leading up to the expedition.   It is expected that scouts planning to attend Isle Royale will also participate in the Easter high adventure expedition to Maryland.    This is a great hike to stay in shape and evaluate your equipment.

Look for the permission form to be uploaded shortly.    In the meantime for those scouts that are interested or definately plan to attend feel free to reply to this blog.

  • Driving the Troop Bus . . . .

Troop 125 continues to encourage adult participation in our events.    This note is sent out to further clarify the Troop Committee's guidelines on adult driving to/from events.

By way of background, the Troop is required to file a "tour permit" wih the Clinton Valley Council on any of our activities that require transportation.   The purpose of this is to allow the Council some oversight on whether troops have sufficient adult participation, trained leaders, and to ensure some records for insurance purposes.    As a part of this we need to identify all drivers and vehicles ahead of time;  the council does a cursory check on insurance/licenses/etc.

This tour permit is fundamentally why Don Balmes works hard to identify drivers prior to the Friday evening departure and we need to understand plans earlier in the week.    Clearly the other reason is to make sure we have enough seatbelts!   We never want to get in the position of lacking proper amount of seats and belts.

When you drive to an event for the purpose of transporting Scouts, the Troop will reimburse you.    As you probably know, part of the event cost that all participants pay is transportation.

If you drive to an event as a part of the troop "caravan" you should show up to Innatech with a full tank of gas.    As you purchase gas for the trip, or at the conclusion, please save the receipt.    You will need to submit this to Alan Miller , our treasurer, as quickly as possible (and he may turn you down if this is not within 90 days!).   Our intent is obviously to reimburse your out-of-pocket cost for helping us transport the Troop.

Two notes:   First, even as a reimbursed driver, you will still pay your share of the transportation cost through the overall activity fee . . . . .  and, we are not typically reimbursing drivers that drive their son to an event at their own convenience (e.g. they needed to do early pick-up, or are coming from some other location).

So it's as simple as that!    Thanks to the many of you that do indeed drive regularly!

  • Summer '08 High Adventure Plans --- Isle Royale

Thank you to all the scouts who provided input on the 4 options under consideration for this Summer's high adventure activity.    Results of the website voting:

    1.  Isle Royale            6 votes

    2.  Boundary Waters   4 votes

         Class VI                4 votes

    4.  U.P. Activity           2 votes

Therefore, a registration application has been submitted to the Isle Royale National Park ranger station.   Due to high demand, only a selected number of permits are granted (based on random drawing).   We should find out in early March whether our application is successful.    If unsuccessful, we will pursue the Boundary Waters canoeing adventure.

Keep watching this space for further information.
